Turmeric root has both culinary and medicinal benefits that can be attributed to curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric. It is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that is used throughout Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines to treat a wide variety of conditions, including flatulence, jaundice, menstrual difficulties, bloody urine, haemorrhage, toothache, bruises, chest pain, and colic. Best stored in your freezer, and shaved off fresh when added to food.
